I got stood up, technically that is. I had this great week, you know, showing a positive attitude towards life from Monday and was surprised when I got approached while popping up for a quick lunch, by a guy that I was admittedly checking out from the corner of my eye. He started with the ‘you look familiar’ line and of course I fell for it…well he did look kinda familiar and I am bad with faces and names. So I played along and eventually he asked for my number which I gave him. Now of course a sister gets stepped to frequently and 99.5% of the time I continue on my way but there was something about him and besides, I was feeling good.  

 He called me 10 minutes later  and we made plans to meet for lunch the following day. Too easy? Couldn’t hurt, I thought – it will be in public and besides I’m going through a’ need attention’ phase . Of course following day, woke up with a smile, carefully picked what I was going to wear, nothing OTT mind you, just look-good-for-the-office wear. Girl was looking and feeling goooood! Whadyaknow – I get a call about an hour and a half before we were meant to meet up (at least he had the decency to call) – can’t make it, urgent work meeting yada yada yada. Sure I understand, well tomorrow it is then. I decided not to tell any of my friends about this, in case it did/didn’t work out, didn’t want to add to the possibility of jinxing before whatever it is even started.

So I go through the whole thing again the next day, yet another look/feel good outfit and this time, an hour before, I get a text message! I mean a text message – thats a tad familiar I thought – the message was: urgent meeting, please can we do tomorrow (which was a Friday) or on the weekend (it was valentines weekend) even after hours…I mulled over it for all of 30 seconds, then sent back a response: “No problem (NAME HERE). Tomorrows out for me lets try next week sometime. Will hear from you. Have a good weekend.”  I thought that was a pretty decent response, you know, not too eager not too aloof, giving him enough space to get back to me…or so I thought. Its now been a week  and I haven’t heard a peep.

I’m okay though, just honestly taken aback! I know I’ve been out of the dating game for a while, out of choice, and have gone through the-I’ll-call- you-tomorrow-only-never-to-be-heard-of-again. I thought I was passed that and it only happened to young gullible girls, clearly haven’t learnt a thing after all these years…and its not like I was into him, I was intrigued – young smooth well groomed, I was just hoping he wasn’t a certain ethnic tribe notorious for being players. Oh well, I guess I’ll never get to find out.  My curiosity did get the better of me and I called him a couple of times this week only to find the phone is off (thank god me thinks!) but I just wanted to know what happened. I guess it never changes. Its true that as you get older its much harder to put yourself out there and when you make the effort (its all those girly magazines) you once again land hard on your backside.

Well I’m not going down THAT road again! At least till the next time I’m approached on the street …and its not by the guy  at the corner.

I succumbed to the pressures of this fast moving world and although still resisting facebook, I decided my own space to whinge, moan and celebrate all that goes on in the life of a single girl in the city
